Life is too short not to create and be surrounded by exciting objects
The artists of Magnus Schevene create wondrous, personalized sculptural installations, modern follys, furnishings, and objects that bring imagination to life.
Seeking novelty in life, we combine new fabrication and design technologies with old world craftsmanship, in a quest to do what we have not previously done. The work of creating objects of extraordinary beauty and utility thrills and fulfills us.
Installations & Site Specific Art: Working with architects and other large-scale project decision makers, we create specific to site works. In various modes of creative process and authorship we work with architects to realize architectural sculptural features that complement and enhance the underlying architecture. Our goal with these projects, in addition to bringing art into existence, is to create a inter-organizational team-wide experience of having achieved something meaningful in which we have become more than we were before, and experience satisfaction in realizing an object from our imagination. In addition to our creative and sculptural fabrication expertise, we are California licensed contractors, bonded and insured. We have relationships with engineering firms who can do advanced structural analysis to fulfill engineering requirements on large scale projects with complex geometry. We have partnerships with artisans and sub-contractors in many disciplines and suppliers of many types of materials, technologies, and
industrial processes with whom we can create great works at scale.
Client Commissions: Working directly with private clients, we create superlatively personal commissioned works. These projects are expensive but very fairly priced, representing honest value at extremely excellent levels of hand craftsmanship and personalization. We value traditional honesty, fairness, integrity, and personal relationship.
Custom Furniture and Fixtures: We have extensive experience designing a range of personalized objects for architects, interior designers, and their clients. We invent or draw on our own concepts and build on previous success, and sometimes we develop concepts already put in motion or imagined by others. We keep abreast of trends in design by attending international contemporary furniture fairs, as well as putting in our homework to studying art & design magazines and websites. We can imagine, design, research, sketch, model, detail, engineer, prototype, render, present, price, sell, fabricate, deliver, and install. We have experience working as designers in interior design firms and commissioning artisans; we have seen the commissioning process from both sides. This gives us a deeper understanding of the process and how to balance the needs of the artist, the sponsoring designer, and the client. We have ‘walked a mile in other people’s shoes.’
Product Creation: George Magnus designs objects that are different, refined, and that are unique to the individual, objects that are extensions of our values of originality, artisan’s excellence, and unique personality. Our artists design products for international home furnishing brands, for up-and-coming brands, and for our own high-end collection. Our product design DNA comes from our passion as custom artisans for finding something new, challenging, and desirable to make, sell, and posses. We design objects that are different, refined, and that are unique to the individual, products that embody our values of originality, artisan’s excellence, and that have unique personality. If a product is to be sold in the luxury end of the market, we can do socially responsible, USA, high-end, short run manufacturing of luxury objects. For products to be mass-manufactured, we can make prototypes or provide aesthetic and specification compliance oversight of products prototyped and manufactured by others.
Modern Follys, Pop Up & Festival Art: When the pure joy of imagination and creation is the priority, and the spirit of playfulness and “just because” is ascendant, the freedom to create beyond cultural habits liberates our creative process. From the first knife that was forged in red hot coal, then thrown at stumps in youthful rapture, to a pop-up “laser bar”, to a “bath- tree-house” inspired by a love of hot spring and bathing culture mashed with the wonder of tree climbing and the intergenerational gifting tradition of treehouse play-spaces, the core spirit that pulls us forward in this work is curiosity, engagement with pure possibility, and imagination. Some of these project are generated from communal efforts, some through personal vision and funding by one of our artists, others by patronage, and others are commissioned works when curiosity is motivating drive.
